When it comes
time to putting photos of your work on your website there are a few things
you may wish to consider. Keeping the file size down to a minimum is a major
must. Most users will leave your site and never come back if your
images take too long to load on their computer. In order to keep your file
size to a minimum, you may have to do some image resizing.
How do you do
this? Depending on how you loaded your images onto your computer, you should
at least have graphic editing software on your machine. All digital cameras
and scanners come with this software bundled in with the software for your
camera or scanner. Knowing how to use the software is a whole different ballgame.
In this issue,
we will provide step by step instructions on how you can do this with a couple
of the more widely know editing software programs.
Adobe Photoshop
1. Open
your image in Photoshop
2. Go to
Image and select Image Size
3. Make
sure your resolution is set to 72 pixels per inch
4. Change
the dimensional size of the photo. (You can do this in either pixel size
or inches.)
5. Press
the OK button
6. Go to
File and select Save For Web
7. Choose
to save your file as a JPEG or GIF (If your images are photos with a lot
of colors in it, you will want to choose JPEG.)
8. Select
either High or Medium Quality
9. Press
OK
10. Save
the picture to your hard drive.
Photoshop Elements
1. Open
your image in Photoshop Elements
2. Go to
the image drop down menu
3. Select
Resize and then Image Resize
4. Make
sure your resolution is set to 72 pixels per inch
5. Change
the size of the photo to the correct pixel size
6. Press
OK
7. Go to
File and select Save For Web
8. Choose
to save your file as a JPEG or GIF (If your images are photos with a lot
of colors in it, you will want to choose JPEG.)
9. Select
either High or Medium Quality
10. Press
OK
11. Save
the image to your hard drive
Although the
above are two of the most popular image editing programs, I have also provided
links to tutorials on resizing images for many other programs.

There are many
more graphic editing software suites out there. If you are having issues resizing
your photos, do a search on Google for your graphic editor. There is a wealth
of tutorials out there. Also feel free to e-mail me with the name of your
program and I am sure I can find a tutorial for you.
Thanks and have
a great day!
